MYTH SLEEP TRAINING IS CHOOSING A SLEEP TRAINING METHOD

EPISODE 3 OF THE AFTER THE STORK PODCAST

EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS

Sleep training is the intentional act of helping a child build a strong sleep foundation in order to achieve healthy sleep (as discussed in episode two). This is why the education portion of the EPS mentioned in episode one is so important! Otherwise, how can you be intentional with your little one's sleep?

ESRA+, the acronym I use when it comes to the five areas of sleep that I evaluate with every single client when going through the process of sleep training...or really anytime evaluating a child's sleep.

ENVIRONMENT - Is the sleep environment conducive for sleep or does it hinder the process?

SCHEDULE - Is the child sleeping at the times of day best for their development and age?

ROUTINES - Do you have a sleep routine in place that contributes to sleep or hinders the process? Are your daily routines contributing to sleep and, if so, how?

ABILITY TO INDEPENDENTLY FALL ASLEEP AND CONNECT SLEEP CYCLES - This is where choosing how you will or will not respond comes into play!

PLUS (+) - What other areas need to be considered for this specific situation? Ex: night feedings, pacifier, other siblings, preschool procrastination, etc.
